FO Alert: Socks

Image
Tree Farm Socks by Natalie Sheldon Cast on: 10/17/2020 Cast off: 9/7/21 Yarn: Leading Men Fiber Arts Show Stealer in Spritely Endeavors (226 yds) Kim Dyes Yarn Sourdough Sock in Murky Pond (156 yds)  I am not good at colorwork. I like to think I'm getting better, and this project definitely helped. Despite my uneven tension, I'm absolutely thrilled about these socks. I knew I had to make them for my mom the moment I saw them. They're too small for me to try on, so hopefully they'll fit her. Generally, if I can't get handknit socks on, I send them to her, so it should be ok. The yarns were great, the pattern was wonderful, and I want to make sooo many pairs of stranded socks now. I'm absolutely obsessed with the pattern on the bottom of the feet.  Excuse the terrible picture. They are too small for me to model! week of WIPs: Day 3

Image
After working on my Tree Farm Socks, I was fighting the urge to cast on a new pair of socks for myself. I managed to convince myself to pull out Curling Mist , which I've been neglecting since about February. They're pretty slow going, but I found myself enjoying working on them a little more since they've been in time-out. It might be because the cable pattern is only on the top half of the sock now so it's a little easier and faster. I did have to take a break to hand wind the cakes of yarn that had fallen apart into balls, but even that was kind of enjoyable. I think that process also helped relax the yarn a little, which had been twisting pretty severely. I love the Birch Hollow Sylvia Sock more than I remember liking it when I started the project. If I happen to get these finished, they might also become my mom's. until tomorrow, xo Uhlissa

week of WIPs: Day 2

Image
My Tree Farm Socks are a gift for my mom. I'm going to see her in a few weeks, so after having the first sock finished for eight months, I finally cast on the second with a sense of urgency. The colorwork, while note one of my strengths, is addicting, and having been knitting most of my socks this year two-at-a-time, this feels like it's flying off the needles. Hopefully they'll be done and ready to journey with me to Idaho. More importantly, I hope they fit, since they're too small for me to try on! until tomorrow, xo Uhlissa

FO Alert: Colour Twist Socks

Image
Pattern: Colour Twist  by  Corinne Fourcade Cast on: 6/20/21 Cast off: 6/26/21 Yarn:  Farmer's Daughter Fibers Rocky Mountain Purls in Strawberry Shortcake (108 yds) Hedgehog Fibres Sock in Rosewood (31 yds) Spun Right Round Classic Sock in Spaced Out (70 yds) I needed a quick sock project to reach some yarnathon goals. Throwing some leftovers together, this is what I ended up with. I'm pretty happy with my first real pair of shorty socks and have been enjoying wearing them.

FO: Wookiee Socks

Image
Wookiee Socks  by Natalie Sheldon Cast on: 4/5/21 Cast off: 6/20/21 Yarn: Madelinetosh Tosh Sock in Horror Hostess (277 yds) Dream in Color Smooshy in Charli au lait (162 yds)  These might be my favorite socks ever. They were challenging, but fun and addictive to knit. As they were a gift for my SO, who has giant flipper feet, I had to use larger needles than called for, and luckily they turned out pretty perfectly. They need a good blocking, and I need to practice more colorwork, but I am thrilled with the end result. xo uhlissa

FO: Hermione's Everyday Socks

Image
I'm pretty happy with how these turned out despite not particularly enjoying the process.  Hermione's Everyday Socks  are obviously a fan favorite, with a bazillion projects on Ravelry. The pattern is a simple repeat, and easy to memorize, but I found them fairly tedious. Cast on: 5/31/21 Cast off: 6/12/21 Yarn: Spun Right Round Classic Sock in Spaced Out (298 yds used)

FO Alert: Raspberry Cordial

Image
Raspberry Cordial by Lisa Ross  Cast on:5/17/21 Cast off:5/29/21 Hedgehog Fibers Sock in Rosewood (71 grams, 310 yds) I think these are my favorite of the Socks of Green Gables .  They were designed for sport weight yarn, but I knit them in fingering, following directions for the Large size.  I knit TAAT toe-up on 2.75mm until the cuff,  where I used smaller needles.  I decided to try Jeny's Super Stretchy Bind off for the first time,  and I'm pretty happy with it, but not sure if I would like it better if I hadn't bound off in the ribbed pattern.  Either way,  they're gorgeous and seem comfy so far.   All four pairs of Socks of Green Gables  I'm not sure what my knitting plan is for the next few days,  but hopefully I'll have some pretty new things to share next week.  Xo uhlissa

FO Alert: Lady Cordelia

Image
Lady Cordelia by Lisa K. Ross madelinetosh Tosh Sock in Rocinante (304 yds) Cast on: 5/2/21 Cast off: 5/16/21 As I watched these come together, I kept thinking they might be the prettiest socks I've ever made. I wasn't sure about the smocked cuff until I was done with it, and then I was totally smitten. The cables made this feel like a very slow project, but the end result was definitely worth it. I made them a little short in the leg, substituted a short row heel, and I probably should have knit a few more rounds before the toe, but overall they fit pretty well. I was also amazed how much yarn the cables took. I knit longer legs on the first two pairs from Socks of Green Gables , but these took 25-30 more yards than either of those.  Xo uhlissa

WIP Roundup 5/15

Image
I had even less knitting time this week than normal,  due to a sore arm I could barely move on Wednesday night after my second covid shot. However,  I'm hoping to make up for it this weekend.  I have four inches left of the feet of my  Lady Cordelia  socks. I've carved out my whole afternoon to work on them. If I can manage to get them finished,  I'll have just over two weeks to cast on and knit the last pair for the Green Gables KAL,  Raspberry Cordial .  I'm not sure if it's the cables,  or just me, but these feel like they're taking forever.  They're absolutely gorgeous,  but I made the leg relatively short (1 1/2 pattern repeats) and substituted a short row heel in hopes of getting to the feet faster.  With the pattern only on the instep, it definitely feels faster,  but that could be an illusion.  I'm also knitting with new needles, which could be a factor.  The Hiyahiya points are super sharp,...

FO Alert: Green Gables

Image
I'm way behind on posting these, but taking decent pictures proved to be rather challenging. They clearly need to be blocked,  but I never block socks and don't intend to start now.  Green Gables by Lisa K Ross Northbound Knitting Merino/Nylon Fingering in Saltwater (272 yds) Cast on: 4/7/21 Cast off: 4/18/21 I love everything about this pair of socks except for the lace on the toe. I love it in other people's pictures and in theory, but I do not love the way the toes look on my feet. I have not tried to actually wear them yet, so maybe I'll change my mind and realize it doesn't bother me so much.  I should have knit the yo's through the back loop to make smaller eyelets, but of course I didn't think about that until I was done.

Weekley WIP Roundup 4/11

Image
This turned into another cast on week. I have so many things I want to knit right now,  that I have a feeling this is going to continue for the foreseeable future.   Green Gables , the second sock of Lisa Ross' KAL , has me totally smitten.  I think this was the one of the four patterns I was most excited about,  and so far it hasn't disappointed.  I don't do much lace knitting,  but this was a manageable amount in a fairly intuitive pattern.  I've lost some momentum now that I'm onto the fairly plain leg/foot, but I'm still really enjoying them.  Boyfriend has been patiently watching me knit things for myself for months,  and I think he was starting to feel a little left out.  I bought this amazing Star Wars book about a month ago,  knowing there were several things in it that he would appreciate.  The pattern I was most excited about was the Wookiee socks , which I cast on for him a couple of nig...

FO Alert : Kindred Spirits

Image
I think this is the fastest I've ever knit a pair of socks.  Kindred Spirits  by Lisa K. Ross Farmer's Daughter Fibers Rocky Mountain Purls in Strawberry Shortcake (196 yds) Northbound Knitting Merino/Nylon Sock in Velvet Underground (78 yds) Cast on: 4/1/21 cast off : 4/5/21   I was not overwhelmed with excitement for this pattern,  but I wanted to fully participate in the KAL . I think my color choices played a large part in the enjoyment I got out of this knit after a fairly reluctant start. I realized last year after several less than impressive color selections for big projects,  that color is definitely not my strength. I've started paying more attention to what works in other people's projects and am feeling much more confident.   I cast on separately and knit past the toe and friendship rings before I moved both socks onto the same cable. I knit TAAT past the heel and up the leg and then separated them ag...

FO Alert: Impossibly Possible

Image
Pattern: Impossibly Possible by Lisa K. Ross Yarn; Manos del Uruguay Alegria in Antigua (107 yds) and Natural (196 yds).  Cast on: 3/7/21 Cast Off: 3/27/21 This was quite the learning experience. These were my first ever pair of toe-up socks. I had always been so intimidated by the technique, but after several attempts at Judy's Magic Cast-On, I finally got it, and I might be a convert. This video was a big help! I usually prefer to read instructions, or look at pictures, but this video made the difference between actually getting these socks started or giving up and finding a new project. I'm incredibly happy with the results, and you'll be seeing more of  Lisa's patterns in my WIPs soon.

FO Alert: Pucker

Image
Finished the second sock today! I had taken a break after I finished the first one and worked on other projects.  Last weekend, I circled back and cast on the second sock.  I worked on it a little every night,  and then managed to commit some time this afternoon to get it finished.   I'm honestly not super thrilled with the results,  but so far they seem pretty comfortable,  and you can never have too many socks. The cuff and heel are both a little loose,  but that's definitely a result of my habit of using larger needles than called for since my feet usually fall pretty squarely between sizes.  Anyway,   Pucker  is definitely not a bad pattern and I'd been excited to knit it, but I don't think I'll do it again. Mostly because my sock pattern queue has pretty much quadrupled in the past few weeks.   Cast on 2/7/21 Cast off 3/20/21 Size medium on 2.75mm. Sweetgeorgia tough love sock in Saffron (...

weekly WIP Roundup 3/13/21

Image
I skipped last week's round up,  because life got in the way and I didn't get much knitting done. This week wasn't much better,  but I do have a few bits of progress to share.  Curling Mist I've almost finished the legs, and I like how they're looking,  but I'm still having trouble getting excited about knitting these socks.  Impossibly Possible  I cast on these amazing  Impossibly Possible  socks last weekend and I absolutely love them, though I haven't had a lot of time to focus on them. It's been quite the learning experience so far.  This is my first attempt at toe-up socks. It took several tries to successfully employ Judy's magic cast on.  This  video  was incredibly helpful.  Then the heel calls for German short rows,  which I had never done before.  I'm not sure what my problem was,  but it took several tries to get right.   I love the mosaic,  the f...

FO Alert: Valentine's socks

Image
Made for the Craft Your Heart Out Flash Craftalong for the ESK Yarnathon.  There is a two week timeline for this challenge, and I feel like that really motivated me.  I got the first sock done in four evenings of knitting, and the second this weekend.  I'm really happy with how they turned out.  Pattern:  Have a Heart Valentine Sock s Yarn: Dream in Color Smooshy (black pearl), Cascade Heritage (lunar rock) and Northbound Knitting Superqash Merino Nylon Fingering (velvet underground) Knit 64 sts on US 2s (2.75mm) and substituted a short row heel.   Cast on 2/1 and finished 2/7.

Finished Object Alert!

Image
Ive finished my first project that I cast on this year and I officially love two at a time knitting! My goal was to get these done today,  but they went so quickly that I finished last night! I stayed up a little late,  but it's hard to go to sleep when you get to the toe decreases.  The strong heel turned out a little looser than I had hoped,  and there a couple of spots where the laddering is pretty bad,  but overall I'm very happy and have been enjoying wearing them all morning.   Pattern:  sumu  by Joanna Ignatius  Yarn: Leading Men Fiber Arts  Show Stopper Cast on: January 14th Cast off: January 30th I enjoyed the pattern,  but I absolutely loved working with this yarn. I have worked with one of Leading Men's other bases on a half finished sock project and enjoyed it then too. Their products are great and I'm looking forward to trying some of the other bases and colors I have stashed. I also have a ...
